As the sun descended on Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium, temperatures dropped and winds intensified, creating ideal conditions for outdoor hockey.

“Summer in Russia,” remarked New York Rangers forward Artemi Panarin, describing the chilly elements perfectly.

Panarin’s goal just 10 seconds into overtime secured a remarkable come-from-behind victory for the Rangers, thrilling fans and players alike.

“We love hockey,” exclaimed Max Weinberg, drummer for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, and a New Jersey native. “Braving the cold is standard for the Weinberg family.”

The weekend saw the local New Jersey Devils triumph over the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday night, with temperatures hovering at 39 degrees Fahrenheit and steadily declining.

“The ice held up well. They did a commendable job,” commented Rangers’ player Mika Zibanejad, reflecting on the outdoor experience. “It transported us back to the good old days of playing outdoors. The puck bounced a bit more, adding to the challenge as the game progressed.”

The football stadium, home to the New York Jets and New York Giants, was packed with enthusiastic fans who embraced the elements to witness the thrilling matchups.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman expressed his awe at the massive turnout, with a total attendance of 150,018 over the weekend. The event marked a triumphant return for the Devils to the Meadowlands, their former home before relocating to Newark in 2007.

Amidst the excitement, the NHL used the event to make two significant announcements: the next Stadium Series game will take place at Ohio Stadium in 2025, followed by the 2026 All-Star Game at the UBS Arena in Elmont, NY.

But for now, the focus remained on the thrilling matches and the unforgettable atmosphere at MetLife Stadium.

“The game was incredible. What an evening,” exclaimed Devils coach Lindy Ruff. “Everything was executed flawlessly. Our fans were treated to an outstanding performance by our team.”

Despite trailing 4-1 and 5-2 at different points, Rangers fans remained resilient, witnessing their team stage a remarkable comeback with three late goals to force overtime.

“Our key players stepped up in crucial moments,” praised Rangers coach Peter Laviolette. “It was a wild game, truly unforgettable.”

Panarin’s game-winning goal ignited an eruption of emotion among players and fans alike, cementing the event as a cherished memory.

“It was electrifying, unlike anything I’ve ever experienced,” shared Panarin. “The fans created an incredible atmosphere that I’ll never forget.”
