Bill Maher recently disclosed that he conducted a lengthy two-hour interview with Kanye West for his “Club Random” podcast but has chosen not to release the episode due to the rapper’s espousal of bigoted views against Jews.
Speaking on a Feb. 5 episode of “TMZ Investigates” titled “Unhinged but Unstoppable,” centered on West, Maher explained his decision, stating, “I thought it was going to be a learning moment. We were here for two hours. By the way, we had an amazing, fun time.” However, he went on to describe West as “a very charming antisemite,” noting that his bigoted sentiments are not unique in America.
Maher expressed concern over West’s influence, particularly among young people, stating, “The problem, I think, is that he appeals mostly — of course he’s a rock star — to young people. They don’t know much and they surely don’t know much about the Middle East or Jews.”
When TMZ founder Harvey Levin suggested parallels between West and Hitler in terms of emboldening others to voice antisemitic views, Maher concurred, emphasizing, “That’s why I wouldn’t air that episode, because I’m not going to contribute to this.”
West’s antisemitic rhetoric has escalated over the past year and a half, with disturbing comments on various platforms. Despite issuing an apology to the Jewish people in December 2023, his pattern of troubling statements has led to professional repercussions, including being dropped by his agency and losing fashion partnerships.
A representative for West did not respond to Variety’s request for comment.
