In an unexpected turn of events, Tom Aspinall finds himself on the sidelines as UFC CEO Dana White remains steadfast in promoting a heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones and former champion Stipe Miocic. While publicly endorsing the Jones vs. Miocic matchup, behind the scenes tells a different story, according to Aspinall (14-3 MMA, 7-1 UFC).
On Tuesday, Aspinall disclosed on social media that the UFC offered him a bout against Miocic (20-4 MMA, 14-4 UFC) at UFC 300, and he readily accepted the opportunity. However, Miocic declined the matchup, expressing interest only in facing Jones.
“As we’re talking about @StipeMiocic, my manager was contacted by the UFC asking if I’d like to fight him on Apr 13th,” Aspinall shared. “I, of course, accepted. A little later, we were told @StipeMiocic doesn’t even want to fight me, and (is) only interested in fighting @JonnyBones.”
Aspinall, who earned the interim UFC heavyweight title in November, has previously voiced frustration regarding the UFC’s matchmaking decisions. Despite holding the interim belt, he faces uncertainty due to Jones’ extended absence, recovering from a torn pectoral muscle and elbow surgery until at least mid-2024.
Expressing a decision to stop lamenting over the situation, Aspinall acknowledged that the anticipated matchup between legends Jones and Miocic for the heavyweight title is what fans desire.
“On that note. I will stop crying, accept it ain’t gonna happen, and enjoy the fight that me and all the other fans want to see,” Aspinall stated. “Legend vs. legend for the heavyweight title. Maximum respect, guys. Yay.”
Aspinall’s comments come after a recent exchange with Jones on social media, where Jones downplayed Aspinall’s resume amid discussions about the next title fight. Aspinall, in response, expressed understanding of Jones’ perspective and conveyed respect for his accomplishments, wishing him a successful recovery and return against Miocic.
