In a remarkable turnaround, the San Jose Sharks clinched a 3-2 overtime triumph against the New York Rangers on Tuesday night, marking their first three-game winning streak of the season. Tomás Hertl emerged as the hero, scoring 1:29 into overtime and sealing a dramatic comeback.
The Sharks faced a daunting 2-0 deficit but mounted a stunning rally in the third period. Nico Sturm and Ryan Carpenter notched crucial goals within the opening five minutes, leveling the score. The stage was set for Hertl’s game-winner, a perfectly executed play initiated by Alexander Barabanov’s adept control of the puck in the offensive zone.
Hertl, reflecting on the pivotal moment, credited the teamwork of Jan Ruuta and Barabanov. He remarked, “Kind of an easy goal for me, but a great job by them for sure. Huge win for us, and it’s nice to have three in a row.”
Artemi Panarin, with his 29th goal, and Adam Fox, who contributed a goal and an assist, were instrumental for the Rangers. Panarin’s wrist shot beat Sharks’ goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood, extending his points streak to 14 out of the last 16 games.
Rangers coach Peter Laviolette expressed disappointment in the missed opportunities to secure a victory. Laviolette stated, “We made mistakes in the third period and it cost us. They were able to tie it up and push it to overtime. That’s disappointing, just from that standpoint. We were in a position to win the game going into the third, and we didn’t get it done.”
The Sharks, buoyed by Captain Logan Couture’s return from injury, have now won both games in a back-to-back series, showcasing resilience after enduring a challenging stretch of losses.
San Jose looks ahead to host the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday, while the Rangers prepare to face the Vegas Golden Knights on Friday.
