Max Holloway, the former UFC featherweight champion, finds himself content with the array of options that have unfolded in his fighting career, despite the BMF title fight not being his initial preference.
After securing notable victories against Arnold Allen and Chan Sung Jung in 2023, Holloway had aimed for another shot at the featherweight title. However, the promotion had different plans, with Alexander Volkanovski booked against rising contender Ilia Topuria for the next title bout.
Facing limited lightweight options due to Charles Oliveira and champ Islam Makhachev being unavailable, Holloway found a favorable alternative with a BMF title bout against Justin Gaethje at UFC 300.
Reflecting on the circumstances, Holloway expressed his satisfaction with having multiple options, especially given the dynamism of the sport. While acknowledging criticisms about the power disadvantage against a high-volume pressure fighter like Gaethje, Holloway sees the fight as an opportunity to capture the BMF title and potentially defend it across weight classes.
“It’s options,” Holloway stated. “I think a lot of doors are going to get opened, a lot of options are going to be open. We’ll see what happens. … First things first is the man in front of me. I got a dangerous guy in Justin Gaethje, but we’re going to handle him first, and then after that, like I said: It’s just a game of options. A lot of things can open up after this fight. That’s what I’m focused on. Focused on getting my hand raised, and shock the world, I guess.
